Years ago, I put myself in recovery after living with a TV addict by disconnecting from everything but a DVD player and Seasons 1 – 7 of The Simpsons. I have no cable, no TiVo, not even a tin foil-covered antenna. I don’t miss it, but occasionally I do wonder what’s changed since I rolled the metaphorical bowling ball into the old Zenith. To find out, I checked in with Plexi folks on what has them riveted this fall:

Hands down, the studio favorite has to be Heroes. Not only is Drake B. an addict, but Paola R. says this super superhero show, “kicks off my week like nobody’s business and makes me want special powers to save the world and kick some ass!” Vicky T. recovered from last year’s disappointing finale only to get reabsorbed in the character development and the brain-puzzle aspect again this year.

Kristi T. has been glued to Damages. Of this law drama starring Glenn Close, she says, “I’m not sure what I’m going to do with my Tuesdays now that it’s over.” Joshua S. similarly hangs on the British sitcom Black Books because, “Dylan Moran is so funny it makes me want to spit!” And then he quoted something from the show, or at least I think he did. It went soaring over my cultural-tourist head.

Amie S. plans to delve into Frontline, as the news show goes in-depth to look at issues such as global warming and climate change, the aftermath of Katrina, growing unrest over the war in Iraq, and conflict in the Middle East. She adds, “Frontline makes 60 Minutes or any other ‘news’ program look like child’s play. They ask the tough questions and don’t pander to politicians. This season, they are going to tackle some of the most pressing news stories of our lives.”

Allen C.’s a sucker for The Office. He says, “Jim and Pam are finally together, Dwight’s still crazy, and Michael’s as insensitive as ever. In other words, awesome.” And, I might add, the show bears no resemblance to his actual workplace.

Jesse R. hates to promote Ashton Kutcher, but he’s all for promoting the dating reality show Beauty and The Geek. “It’s trash television the way it’s supposed to be: socially awkward ‘indoor kids,’ vapid, silicon-enhanced belles, challenges, and prizes!” Speaking of reality shows and silicon-enhancing, Lisa S. and Vicky T. both got suckered into the Bret Michaels vehicle Rock of Love. Lisa claimed it was against her will, but I think it’s just her rocker side showing through.

Lisa S. also digs House because, “Who doesn’t love a pill popping genius doctor who strikes sarcasm and hostile comments to all that pass while he cures the rarest of ailments ever encountered?”

Other favorites include Weeds (suburban MILF drug slinger), Tell Me You Love Me (free therapy), Curb Your Enthusiasm (absurdities of normal interactions), Prison Break (thickening plots), Pushing Daisies (dark humor), Bionic Woman (former stars of Battlestar Galactica), Journeyman (time travel), Amazing Race (racing, natch) and Lost (desert islands).

All in all, it’s a busy season in TV land, which makes me sigh in relief that I don’t have to keep up with all those involving plotlines. Besides, they just released The Simpsons, Season 10, which should keep me busy until at least December.

It isn’t often that I have occasion or interest in tooting my own horn, but as it turns out, this month, I get to do so while also championing some very, very talented musicians: The Avett Brothers. Check out this feature piece that I wrote on the Avetts for the latest issue of Magnet Magazine.

Even if you aren’t prone to rattling, rootsy, cow punk music, this band may still grab the seat of your pants and set it a-wigglin’. If you’re going to Bumbershoot on Saturday, catch them on the Mural Ampitheater state around 4-ish. You’ll see me up front, singing along, ducking flying banjos, and grinning like a loon.

For the past six months, the people of Plexipixel have been busy challenging our brains with projects such as the MyComix Comix Creator, attending the Platform Animation Convention, and creating websites such as School of the Future. But that doesn’t mean we can’t let down our collective hair and indulge in necessary summer pleasures.

[Strains of Alice Cooper's "School's Out" play ...]

The Simpsons fans among us marched across Seattle Center to witness the Kwik-E-Mart/7-11 transformation at the corner of 4th and Denny. If he wasn’t intent on leaving them mint-in-box, Ian H might be chomping down a bowl of Krusty-Os at this very moment. Fueled by the driving need to see giant robots explode, other Plexi people banked on Transformers the Movie to provide their summer rush. Devi P entered the studio the next morning gasping, “I felt like a teenage boy!” (Yes, that was a rave.)

Speaking of machinery moving at high speeds, Allen C plans to try his hand and his wheels in the exciting world of Autocross. Vicky T and Matt T will get their fill of sunshine and open road while cruising with the Vespa posse at Amerivespa, happneing in Seattle this year. Lindsey S looks forward to finding her way onto the water by surf, sail, or float.

Why does good food and drink taste so much better in the summer? Aime S says it’s because that’s when the corn on the cob is freshest. Drake B prefers gyros, Manny’s Pale Ale, and mojitos to cool off. Go easy on Jesse H and Candi’s “Sip and Go Naked,” though, as word on the street is that it leaves a potent hangover. (No surprise, considering that it consists of equal parts limeade concentrate, gin or vodka, light beer, and ice.) Says Vicky T, “Moral of the story: Don’t stop drinking the ‘Sip and Go Naked’ until the end of October.” Done and done.

On the stereo: Thin Lizzy, Erasure, Latin jazz, Viva Voce, Brazilian Girls, The Shins’ Chutes Too Narrow, U2’s Joshua Tree and Zooropa, Midnight Oil’s Blue Sky Mining, The Arcade Fire, The Avett Brothers, Bert Kaempfert, and anything dance-y and fun. Over in Suite C, Jesse R commandeers the stereo and dumps a big, soggy bucket of Yacht Rock down upon us. We have to accept it, because once he puts on his captain’s hat, we’re all too intimidated to change the dial.

And the action isn’t all local. Ian R will indulge in birthday tea and crumpets in jolly old Victoria. Paola R plans to hoof it to Boston for a family reunion. Lisa S and Keli F amplified summer by leaving for Florida and Thailand, respectively. We were jealous until we looked at weather forecasts for those places. Joshua S agrees, preferring to stay indoors, away from the sun.

Sheesh, all that activity makes us want to indulge in another favorite summer pastimes: long naps and premium lounging. We’re off to the Hammock District. Happy July!

From our dear friend, Ms. Ellen Forney:
